GREY MATTER

I’m still in France and before I came over this time, I had set myself 3 goals: 1) To play the piano 2) to learn French and 3) to write that book that I have been thinking about for approximately 15 years.

So far so good. I am on Chapter 4 of my book, I am playing the piano and revisiting old melodies that I haven’t played since I left school and I have finally begun learning French via an App called Babbel. Having self-disciple as I have previously mooted is not something that I have exercised much in my life, not where anything other than food is concerned. I’m alone right now and this is the perfect opportunity to pursue these goals, if not only out of boredom and desperation in certain instances! Part of the attraction to these genres is my fear of getting Alzheimer’s. Apparently learning new tunes and reading music as well as learning a new language are both up there in the top suggestions in keeping one’s grey matter functional and healthy. For me the key to success lies in enabling these activities to become part of my routine so that they almost become a habit . However, I’m secretly hoping that the pleasure I derive from all three will be sufficient incentive for me to want to continue.

HOWEVER…… I don’t want this to become a smokescreen for my more complex underlying issues and that by focussing on other things, I give myself permission to ignore the elephant in the room, i.e. my eating rituals. There has been some progress today on this very issue but I’ll write about it in another blog post.

I have to finish Chapter 4 first!
